Wood is a natural product and it will react to changes in the weather. But, with regular care and attention, your outdoor space should be useable – and look beautiful – for many years to come.
The paint and wood oils/stain we use
We use the best quality paints and stains and these are rated for 10 years of protection. However, we strongly recommend that you re-paint or re-treat your timber decking/building every 3 years to maintain its condition, particularly any exposed sides or buildings in coastal areas. Sadolin Superdec Satin is our paint of choice. Osmo oils are among the best for protecting natural timber and come in a range of clear and tinted options.
Changes you may spot in your product
· If you don’t keep your building well ventilated, you may see black mould arriving, or even a dark blue stain. Mould discolours timber and makes it more permeable. Blue stain is part of the same family of surface-dwelling fungi but it penetrates deeper into the surface layers of timber.
· The level of humidity in the air will have an impact on your timber building. Dry weather will cause porous fibres in the panels to shrink and in the winter months the wood is more likely to swell.
· All this movement can cause splits and cracks to appear along the grain of the wood. These are most common during the summer as the timber dries out. The splits are not a fault and the product will still be structurally sound. Ronseal Multi Purpose Ready Mixed Wood Filler is an ideal choice for filling any cracks or splits. It is easy to apply, sand or wipe down and then paint over.
How to keep your outdoor building waterproof
· Keep it ventilated.
· Raise it off the ground by at least 50mm.
· Position it away from overhanging trees or foliage and avoid areas where water collects in pools. Be sure to sweep any piles of leaves from the roof, if they collect in piles they will trap water.
· Use an end-grain protector to protect corners and panel joints.
· Add gutters to reduce splashback. Rain runs from the roof, hits the ground and splashes back onto the building, guttering helps to reduce this.
· Seal panels and windows with flexible silicone sealant.
· Paint or oil/stain it regularly with a good quality, weatherproofing product or a clear treatment.
